Things people ask me and things I would want to know before signing into anything. If yours is not here, email me.
What is wavfeed?
Bandcamp tells you about new releases by email, one mail per release. Follow more than a handful of artists and that is a lot of mail. wavfeed reads your Bandcamp feed and shows it week by week on your phone. This week, last week, what your friends bought, what is coming up. It talks to Bandcamp the same way your browser does.
Why did you make this?
Because I was sick of having to choose between a nice way to keep up with music and a business that pays artists next to nothing. Spotify et al used to at least have the nice app going for them, and somehow even that gets worse every year. Bandcamp is the opposite. It pays artists properly, and keeping up with releases there means digging through a pile of emails.
I care a lot about software that feels great to use, probably too much. I like making things that make people a little happier. And I think that is how you get people to do the right thing, because not a lot of people switch to the ethical option just because it is ethical. They switch when it is also the nicer one. I made wavfeed because I wanted it myself, and because I hope it makes it a little easier to leave Spotify behind and give your money to a place that gives it to artists.
Is it free?
Yes, while it's being tested. Later some parts that cost me money to run may cost something. I'd rather give it all away but rent is rent, and what I really want is to keep making cool shit and be able to pay the bills doing it. If wavfeed can get me a bit closer to that I'll look for a reasonable way. If I ever can't keep it going I would like to open source it so it doesn't vanish on you.
Is this made by Bandcamp?
No. It is one person with no connection to Bandcamp. It reads your own feed the way your browser does and the only thing it ever writes is the heart on your wishlist.
Is it safe to sign in?
You sign in on Bandcamp's own page inside the app and that sign in never leaves your phone. There is no wavfeed account and no wavfeed server that sees your sign in or your feed. The privacy page has the details.
Do I need a Bandcamp account?
Yes. wavfeed shows your own Bandcamp feed and nothing else.
How do I get in?
On an iPhone, test it on TestFlight: the link installs Apple's TestFlight app if you do not have it, then wavfeed. On Android it is not out yet; email me and I will put you on the test when it opens. Either way it is a test build while I find out what breaks on phones that are not mine.
Can I use it on my computer?
Not yet. The web app came first and I closed it, the phone app is where the work goes now. Maybe I'll make a desktop app in the future.
This is cool!
Not a question, but thank you! If you are working on something interesting and want me on it, get in touch. I am available for work.
